How can I get all my files from all the programs on my old computer to my new Windows 7 computer?
Windows easy transfer is used to transfer your files from your old PC (Windows XP, Vista or Windows 7) to your new PC.There are some caveats that you must follow to accomplish the transfer.
- You must be an Administrator
- Programs cannot be transferred. They must be installed on your new computer.
- Windows Easy Transfer can't transfer files from a 64-bit version of Windows to a 32-bit version of Windows. If you're transferring from a 64-bit version of Windows Vista to a 32-bit version of Windows 7 you can move your files manually or use Backup and Restore in Windows Vista. If you're transferring from a 64-bit version of Windows XP, you'll need to move your files manually.
- Think of the computer you are transferring from as the "old" computer and the computer you are transferring too as the "new" computer.
- Start the Windows Easy Transfer on the New Computer.The file types that can be transferred with Windows Easy Transfer are listed on the Windows Easy Transfer opening screen. To start Windows Easy Transfer, click the Windows 7 Start button .Type Easy Transfer or transf in the Search programs and files field and click on the Windows Easy Transfer icon under the Programs section.The Windows Easy Transfer opening window displays what types of files can be transferred and has additional information important to a successful transfer. Please read it when you transfer.
The file types you can transfer does not include programs. Program settings can be transferred but programs must be installed on the new computer.

- An Easy Transfer Cable
The Easy Transfer Cable is a specially designed USB cable that connects two computers and works with Windows Easy Transfer to transfer information between the computers. It's one of the easiest ways to transfer files and settings to your new computer and works with Windows XP and Windows Vista. You should always start Windows Easy Transfer on your new computer and plug in the cable only when you're instructed to do so. Before you plug in the cable on your old computer, be sure to insert the CD that came with it to install the Windows Easy Transfer software and continue the transfer process.
- A Network
Make sure that both computers are connected to the same network. On your new computer (the computer that you want to transfer your files and settings to), start Windows Easy Transfer and then follow the instructions.
- An external hard disk (a USB flash drive)
You will need a USB port on the old computer and the new computer. A USB flash drive large enough to do the entire transfer in one move. It is possible to use a USB flash drive multiple times to accomplish the transfer but USB Flash Drives have become fairly inexpensive. A USB flash drive large enough to do the transfer are available and fairly inexpensive.
No matter which transfer option you select, the next window requests you identify the computer you are on as the new computer or the old computer. If you are following theses instructions you are on the New computer.
As long as you are on the New computer click on "This is my new computer".On the first two options "An Easy Cable Transfer" and "NetworK" selecting "This is my old computer" directs you to start on your new computer.Once you are on the new computer, follow the instructions for the Windows Easy Transfer. The instructions are not complicated and as long as you read each screen you should have no problem.The External Hard Disk or USB Flash Drive is considered the easiest method for most home or small office users not on a network.To use the USB flash drive method, plug the USB flash drive into the new computer and click I need to install it now.On the next window select USB flash drive.
Select the USB flash drive you plan to use for the Windows Easy Transfer and click OK.
The Windows Easy Transfer will load on the USB flash drive. A progress bar will show the installation progress and signal you when it is completed.When the transfer has completed a window will open with instructions on locating the Windows Easy Transfer program on the USB flash drive and how to load it on your old computer. When you have completed the instructions, click the Next button.After locating the Windows Easy Transfer program on the USB flash drive remove it from the new computer and insert it in the old computer. The Windows Easy Transfer program should begin without any input from you. In the event the Windows Easy Transfer does not start follow the on the screen instructions.Follow the steps on the screens in which you will select what you wish to transfer and if you wish to password protect it (not necessary) etc.Click Next.
Select the USB flash drive.This screen insures you have moved the USB flash drive to the old computer.Progress bars will show users and drives being scanned.You can Password protect the transfer but there is no reason to do this if you are doing a personal transfer from your old computer to your new computer. You can leave the Password field blank and click Save.When the Windows Easy Transfer has completed on the old computer click the Save button and remove the USB Flash Drive and insert in the new computer.A "Starting Windows Easy Transfer" window will open with a progress bar showing the preparation to run the Windows Easy Transfer.Follow the direction on each window. Most windows will be very similar to the removal of the data from the old computer.
