What are some of the major format symbols in edit or translate/edit?

Format symbols are codes that help you format text when you translate or edit a transcript or when you define dictionary entries. For example, you use format symbols to make text bold or to underline it. However, some format symbols are used to perform other editing activities that aren't strictly formatting. For example,  You can use the and to indicate which text you want to be itemized on the Index page.

You can also access realtime commands from the Format Symbols list.

You can access Format Symbols in the Edit Text module and in various dialog boxes. Symbols with { } brackets are realtime commands. Double-click any of the colored symbols for more information on how to use it.

<Answer> Formats the text following the symbol as an answer, according to the answer positioning values set in Page Layout.

<Bold Off> Turns bold formatting off for text following this symbol. The formatting shortcut for <Bold Off> is F4+b.

<Bold On> Turns bold formatting on for text following this symbol. Can be turned off with the <Bold Off> symbol. The formatting shortcut for <Bold On> is F4+B.

<Cap Next> Capitalizes the next word following this symbol. The formatting shortcut for <Cap Next> is F4+F6.

<Cap Off> Turns off all word capitalization for text following this symbol. The formatting shortcut for <Cap Off> is F4+v.

<Cap On> Capitalizes the letters of all words following this symbol. Can be turned off with the <Cap Off> symbol. The formatting shortcut for <Cap On> is F4+V.


<Cap Previous> Capitalizes the word before this symbol. The formatting shortcut for <Cap Previous> is F4+F7.


<Centering Off> Turn off centering for text following this symbol. The formatting shortcut for <Centering Off> is F4+h.


<Centering On> Centers all text following this symbol. Can be turned off with the <Centering Off> symbol. The formatting shortcut for <Centering On> is F4+H.


<Colloquy> Indents the text to the colloquy position. The formatting shortcut for <Colloquy> is F4+C.


<Delete Space> Deletes a space. Can be used in conjunction with outlines or text to delete spaces before or after the specified outline or text. The formatting shortcut for <Delete Space> is F4+ ~.


<Glue> Used for spelling words and for acronyms. Attaches a letter to whatever is next to it, as long as it is not a space. The formatting shortcut for <Glue> is F4+G.


<Index Off> Indicates the end of text to be included in the index. The formatting shortcut for <Index Off> is F4+i.


<Index On> Indicates the beginning of text to be included in the index. The formatting shortcut for <Index On> is F4+I.


<Italics> The shortcuts to turn Italics On and Off are F4 + D, F4 + d.


<Keep Together> Keeps words together so they will not be separated by a line break. The formatting shortcut for <Keep Together> is F4+K.


<Line Number Off> Prevents line numbers from appearing on the printed page for the text following this symbol. The formatting shortcut for <Line Number Off> is F4+z.


<Line Number On> Prints line numbers for all lines of text following this symbol. Can be turned off using the <Line Number Off> symbol. The formatting shortcut for <Line Number On> is F4+Z.


<New Line> Starts a new line of text immediately after this symbol. The formatting shortcut for <New Line> is F4+L.


<New Page> Starts a new page of text immediately after this symbol. The formatting shortcut for <New Page> is F4+N.


<New Paragraph> Starts a new paragraph of text immediately after this symbol. The text indents to the paragraph position set in Page Layout. The formatting shortcut for <New Paragraph> is F4+p.


<Prefix> Used in conjunction with text to indicate that the specified word should be joined with the word following it. The formatting shortcut for <Prefix> is F4+x.


<Right Margin Release> Use this symbol when a word or words are split incorrectly at the end of a line. The formatting shortcut for Right Margin Release is F4 + r.


<Question> Formats the text following the symbol as a question, according to the question positioning values set in Page Layout.



<Single-Space Off> Formats text following this symbol in double-spaced lines. The formatting shortcut for <Single-Space Off> is F4+s.


<Single-Space On> Formats the text to allow single spaced lines following this symbol. Can be turned off with the <Single-Space Off> symbol. The formatting shortcut for <Single-Space On> is F4+S.


<Subscript Off> Turns off subscript formatting for text following the symbol. The formatting shortcut for <Subscript Off> is F4+y.


<Subscript On> Turns on subscript positioning for text following the symbol. Subscripts appear slightly below the normal line of text. Subscript formatting can be turned off with the <Subscript Off> symbol. The formatting shortcut for <Subscript On> is F4+Y.


<Suffix> Used in conjunction with text to indicate that the specified word should be joined with the word before it. If the EZ Link feature has been selected, it uses rules of grammar when joining the suffix with the root word and attempts to spell the word correctly.


<Superscript Off> Turns off superscript formatting for text following the symbol. The formatting shortcut for <Superscript Off> is F4+w.


<Superscript On> Turns on superscript positioning for text following the symbol. Superscripts appear slightly above the normal line of text. Superscript formatting can be turned off with the <Superscript Off> symbol. The formatting shortcut for <Superscript On> is F4+W.


<Tab> Inserts a tab according to the tab values set in Page Layout. The formatting shortcut for <Tab> is F4+T.


<Uncap Next> Removes capitalization from the word following this symbol. The formatting shortcut for <Uncap Next> is F4+F5.


<Underline Off> Turns off underlining for text following this symbol. The formatting shortcut for <Underline Off> is F4+u.


<Underline On> Turns on underlining for text following this symbol. Can be turned off with the <Underline Off> symbol. The formatting shortcut for <Underline On> is F4+U.
