Case CATalyst 13 Exhibit Auto link

[INQUIRY]

What is Case CATalyst 13 Exhibit Auto link?

[SOLUTION]

When Exhibit Auto link is used, the CATalyst transcript is exported to an .XMEF file type which can be opened in Exhibit Linker, Exhibit Linker Reader and/or TextMap. Any transcript attachments (via the Attachment format symbol) will be retained and linked in the TextMap software and could be autolinked based on the exhibit aliases found in the Exhibit Linker software.

For example, you have Plaintiff’s Exhibit Number 43 in the transcript with a photo as the attachment. Let’s say that the Exhibit Linker software has the following exhibit aliases: Plaintiff’s Exhibit Number, Plaintiff’s Exhibit No., Plaintiff’s Exhibit, and Plaintiff’s. Exhibit Linker software has the capability to autolink the attachment in all the places where Plaintiff’s Exhibit Number 43 appears in the transcript, including when it was referenced as one of the aliases. In other words, if the reference “Plaintiff’s 43” appeared in the transcript using the exhibit alias feature in Exhibit Linker, it could be linked to the attachment. However, it was made clear to us (on numerous occasions) that CATalyst needed to have the ability to create exhibit aliases instead of relying on Exhibit Linker software or other third party software.

Case CATalyst Beta V13 Build 17990 has the ability to create exhibit aliases, automatically link exhibits throughout the file and manually link exhibits.

Case CATalyst Beta V13 Build 17990 has the ability to create exhibit aliases, automatically link exhibits throughout the file and manually link exhibits. New to Build 17990 is an Attachments menu item which is available from Translate/Edit’s Tools menu which includes Autolink Exhibits..., Manual Link, Remove Link and Autolink Options... Four keyboard map functions (matching the menu options) are available under an Autolink category. An Advanced Edit option, Autolink after selecting attachment, is available when using the Manual Link feature.

Autolink Options:

In Translate/Edit, select Tools, Attachments and then Autolink Options… CATalyst provides a list of preset autolink aliases. You can create new aliases and/or delete existing aliases.

Click the New icon to create a new autolink alias. A blank entry displays.
Type the new aliases and press Enter to complete the entry.
Highlight an existing alias and click the Delete icon. The entry is removed from the list.
Highlight an existing alias and click the Move Up icon to move the entry higher in the list. The order in which entries appear in the list have no effect on the autolink functionality.
Highlight an existing alias and click the Move Down icon to move the entry lower in the list. The order in which entries appear in the list have no effect on the autolink functionality.

Import - allows you to import a list of autolink aliases from a .txt file. For example, if you have been using Exhibit Linker (or another third party software), you can export the list of your exhibit aliases from that software to a .txt file and import them into CATalyst’s autolink aliases list.

Exportallows you to export the current list of autolink aliases to a .txt file that can be shared with another reporter/scopist or imported into Exhibit Linker.

Include Files

If you have include files that you have modified and inserted the Attachment Point format symbol as part of the parenthetical, we recommend that you review the include files to make sure the Attachment Point format symbol is as close to the exhibit number as possible or within the text surrounded by indexing codes.

For example
:

(Exhibit # was marked for identification.)
Or if you prefer, you can remove the Attachment Point format symbol from the include file and use the new autolink feature which adds the attachment points for you.

Reveal Codes displays:

(Exhibit <Index Heading On B><Scanstop Begin>#<Scanstop End><Attachment Point><Index Heading Off B>,…)

See Include files that contains the Attachment Point format symbol section in this document for instructions.

If you have not modified your include files to include the Attachment Point format symbol and you have been manually inserting the Attachment Point format symbol, there is no need to review your include files. When you use the Autolink Exhibits feature, the Attachment Point format symbol will automatically be inserted. See Inserting the Attachment Point format symbol while Editing section below.

Autolink Exhibits

Inserting the Attachment Point format symbol while Editing Let’s walk through the Autolink Exhibits process when you bring in an include file or dictionary definition that does not already contain the Attachment Point format symbol. We will use a parenthetical for Plaintiff’s Exhibit Number 58 as an example. In the transcript you have the following parenthetical:

  1. You include your exhibit parenthetical. For example:
(Plaintiff's Exhibit Number #, was marked for identification.)
  • You replace the # with the number 58. For example:
(Plaintiff's Exhibit Number #, was marked for identification.)
  • You then press Alt + t, h, a (Tools, Attachments, Autolink Exhibits…)

  • CATalyst automatically inserts an Attachment Point format symbol immediately following the exhibit number and opens the last location where you selected an attachment. Double click an attachment or highlight an attachment and click Open (or press Enter).
  • The Autolink Exhibits dialog box displays showing the exhibit information that was autolinked along with any aliases that match throughout the transcript.

Detailed information about this dialog box appears later in this document.

    Do one of the following:

    a.  To verify an occurrence, double click an entry and the cursor moves to that location in the transcript. To prevent a particular entry from being autolinked, click the box in the Autolink column to remove the check mark.

    b.  To confirm the “checked” autolinked exhibits, click OK.

    c. To cancel the autolinking process, click Cancel.

  • Assuming you didn’t cancel the autolinking process, all occurrences in the transcript that are autolinked are surrounded by <Attachment Text Begin> and <Attachment Text End> format symbols.

Include files that contains the Attachment Point format symbol.  Let’s walk through the process when your include files already contain an Attachment Point format symbol.  If you insert the Attachment Point into the parenthetical while editing, please read the Inserting the Attachment Point format symbol while Editing section.

      1. You include your exhibit parenthetical. For example:
(Exhibit # , was marked for identification.)
      2. You replace the # with the actual exhibit number. For example:
(Exhibit 1024 , was marked for identification.)
      3. You double click the Attachment Point icon ( ). In the Open dialog box, select the attachment file and press Enter. The Autolink Exhibit dialog box displays. For example:

Detailed information about this dialog box appears later in this document.
      4. Do any of the following:

      5. Assuming you didn’t cancel the autolinking process, all occurrences in the transcript that are autolinked are surrounded by <Attachment Text Begin> and <Attachment Text End> format symbols.
By default, when double clicking an Attachment Point icon CATalyst will
automatically display the Autolink Exhibit dialog box once you select the
attachment file. A new option, Autolink after selecting attachment has
been added to the Advanced Edit options dialog box.

Let’s say the attorney referred to Exhibit 1024 (using the above example)
as Ryan 1024 and you want to include the attachment to that reference.
So you insert an Attachment Point format symbol, double click it and
select the attachment file and press Enter. You get the following message:

CATalyst is letting you know that “Ryan” is not a current autolink alias (Autolink Options dialog box), but do you want to autolink it anyway. You don’t necessarily want to add Ryan as an autolink alias since it is
only used in this job. If you select Yes, CATalyst displays the Autolink Exhibit dialog box. If you select No, the message box closes and no linking occurs. (See Manual Link below for more information.)

If you do not want the Autolink Exhibit dialog box to display after selecting an attachment file, change the Autolink after selecting attachment option to No.

      Manual Link

There may be occasions where you want to autolink an exhibit but you don’t want to ‘global’ that autolink throughout the transcript. Using the example from above, let’s say the attorney referred to Exhibit 1024 simply as 1024 and you want to include the attachment to that reference but you don’t
want to autolink it throughout the job. So you insert an Attachment Point format symbol, double click it and select the attachment file and press Enter. Depending on your Advanced Edit options, do one the following:

      Do one of the following:

      a. If your Autolink after selecting attachment option is set to Yes, the autolink anyway message displays. Since you only want to link this one occurrence of 1024, you click No.

      b.  If your Autolink after selecting attachment option is set to
      No, go to Step 2.

      c.  Highlight 1024 and press
      Alt + t, h, m (Tools, Attachment, Manual Link).

      d. CATalyst automatically inserts the <Attachment Text Begin> and <Attachment Text End> format symbols around 1024 and the attachment.

      Remove Link

This feature can be used to manually remove a link at one location.

      Things you need to know

Autolink recognizes any alphanumeric string that includes digits and/or capped letters as exhibit labels.

Autolink Exhibits dialog box displays the ‘autolink aliases’ for the selected text and the Attachment file name on the dialog box title bar along with detailed information in the 5 columns.

Autolink column displays a checkbox with a checkmark to indicate the item in that row will be autolinked once you click OK. To remove an item from being autolinked, click the box to remove the checkmark.

Status column displays the current status and displays one of three icons.

      indicates the item(s) is autolinked.

indicates there is a conflict with the attachment. For example, you have attempted to autolink the same exhibit number with different attachments.

indicates the entry cannot be autolinked and the Autolink column will not and cannot have a checkmark in the box. This could occur if you try to auto link text that is already partially auto linked to another attachment.

Current Text column displays how the item currently displays in the transcript.

Preview Text column displays how the item will display after it is autolinked.
Options button allows you to add and/or delete autolink aliases. If changes are made and you select OK, CATalyst will reload all the data in the Autolink Exhibit dialog box and user selection changes will be lost.

Keyboard Map Functions are available under the Autolink category
